THE BULGARIAN ROOM

Old stories.
Living threads.

Come closer to the traditions carried in masks, threads and movement. A small room for Bulgaria’s living cultural memory.

A tradition belongs to its people.

These short introductions link to heritage records. Regional and family practices differ. The reflection exercises and decorative drawings are contemporary creations for Tajnstvo.

01 / MARCH · МАРТ

Martenitsa

A wish carried by a thread.

On 1 March, red and white threads are made, given and worn to welcome spring. A blossoming tree or the sight of a stork or swallow can mark the moment to remove them. Related customs are shared across Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Moldova and Romania.

02 / JANUARY · ЯНУАРИ

Masks & new beginnings

A village becomes a stage.

Bulgaria’s masquerade traditions vary by region. In the Pernik region, Surova is celebrated on 13–14 January. Survakari wear handmade masks and costumes, gather in the village and visit homes. The living custom is passed between generations; it is distinct from the city’s staged festival programme.
